Ayurvedic Tips for our furry babies. Summer means more time outdoors, swimming in the lakes, longer walks, and sunny adventures for both us humans and our furry companions...but it also brings unbearable heat, pests, and skin irritations that can affect your dog’s health and comfort.
Ayurveda teaches us to keep things cool, balanced, and calm during the hot season. Here’s how to keep your pup happy and healthy during summer, the natural way.
1. Beat the Heat: Hydration & Shade
Dogs don’t sweat like we do. They pant to regulate temperature. In hot weather, overheating can happen quickly.
What to do to support your dog:
Always provide fresh, cool water indoors and on the go.
Avoid walks during peak heat (11:00–17:00); opt for early mornings or/evenings.
Provide shade or cooling mats for relaxation.
2. Gentle, Cooling Baths
Heat, sweat, and dust can clog your dog’s pores and irritate the skin.
What to use:
A mild, cooling shampoo with herbs like aloe vera, mint, or vetiver
Rinse thoroughly and dry gently—don’t trap moisture in the undercoat.
Limit baths to once every 2–3 weeks unless your dog is especially active outdoors.
Our Roots for Tails Sensitive or Tick & Flea Shampoos are perfect for refreshing summer baths without harsh chemicals.
3. Protect from Parasites
Fleas and ticks thrive in warm weather and can cause allergic reactions or transmit disease.
What helps:
Use a natural tick repellent - avoid synthetic chemicals that may irritate skin or disrupt hormones.
Apply our Roots for Tails Spot-On Oil to repel parasites using clove, cinnamon, lemongrass, and other safe essential oils.
Check your dog daily for ticks, especially after hikes or park visits.
4. Brush More, Not Less
Summer shedding helps dogs regulate body temperature - but it needs your help.
How to do it:
Brush 2–3 times a week to remove dead fur and promote air circulation through the coat.
Use a detangling spray, like our Roots for Tails Detangler Spray, to soften knots and prevent matting, especially in long-haired dogs.
Don’t shave double-coated breeds - this can damage their natural cooling system.
5. Bonus tip! Support from the Inside
Skin health starts in the gut. Summer is a great time for lighter, hydrating foods. Add to your dog’s diet:
Omega-3 oils (flaxseed, fish oil)
Cucumbers, blueberries, and coconut water (in moderation)
Cooling herbs like coriander or fennel (ask your vet first)
Summer, the Ayurvedic Way
In Ayurveda, summer is the Pitta season—hot, intense, and fire-dominant. Dogs, like humans, benefit from rituals that calm and cool them down. Keep things slow, soothing, and skin-friendly. With gentle grooming, mindful walks, and a little herbal help, summer can be your dog’s happiest season yet!
